Grotesque, strange, plant-life beasts with countless tentacles and gaping maws. Despite being plant life, some are able to fly.

The Malboro (モルボル, Moruboru ?), also known as a Molbol, Morbol or Oscar, is a recurring enemy from the Final Fantasy series ever since its first appearance in Final Fantasy II. In early games they attack in large groups, and in later games they tend to attack solo. Malboros are large, green, tentacled beings, with an anemone-like head and large mouths. They may be inspired by real world scallops (which can have up to 200 eyes). In most games, Malboros are much larger than humans.

Similar to the Tonberry, Malboros have ranked among the more difficult enemies in the series, as their signature move Bad Breath can inflict many status effects on its targets, crippling unprotected parties. Malboros often have other status attacks as well, and other breath-based attacks. Common variants include the Great Malboro (モルボルグレート, Moruboru Gurēto ?), and the Malboro Menace (モルボルワースト, Moruboru Wāsuto ?), among others.

Final Fantasy II [ ]

Malboros seem to have been conceived as water dwellers, hence the need of a subspecies that lives on land, Malboro Terra (ランドモルボル, Randomoruboru ?). There are several types of Malboros. None of them know the Bad Breath attack, but their regular attacks cause several status aliments.

Final Fantasy IV [ ]

Malboros appear in both the Sylph Cave and Lunar Ruins. The Malboro Menace is fought in the Lunar Ruins and Great Malboro in the Cave of Trials, both exclusive to the Advance and The Complete Collection versions.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years [ ]

The Malboro also has other versions, including the Count Malboro and its counterparts, the Marquis Malboro and Duke Malboro. Their titles are possible references to the ones shared by the demons mentioned in the book, The Lesser Key of Solomon. Some are bosses or recurring enemy encounters. The Worst Malboro and Great Malboro are also present.

Final Fantasy VI [ ]

Malboros (Oscars in early versions) usually attack with a group of stronger enemies. Once all other enemies have been defeated, the Malboros will start using the Bad Breath (Sour Mouth in earlier versions) on the whole party, where it can be learned by Strago. Its stronger variants are Great Malboro and Malboro Menace

Final Fantasy VII [ ]

Malboros appear on the cold mountain paths of Gaea's Cliff and also rarely in the Northern Cave. Malboros can also appear in the Gold Saucer as a monster in the Battle Square's seventh round, after obtaining the Highwind. They use their signature move, Bad Breath, which can be learned as an enemy skill.

Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- [ ]

Malboros are found in Banora Underground. They appear and behave similarly to the Final Fantasy VII version. Other variants also appear: Land Malboro, Gaea Malboro and Great Malboro.

Final Fantasy VIII [ ]

Malboros appear on the Island Closest to Heaven and the Island Closest to Hell, the Grandidi Forest, as well as the Great Plains of Esthar before the Lunar Cry. They almost always use Bad Breath on their first turn, and thus the party should be prepared with good status defense junctions. They give Malboro Tentacles used to teach Quistis the Blue Magic, Bad Breath and to make her ultimate weapon, Save the Queen. The tentacles are also needed to acquire Doomtrain. Malboros can be devoured to boost Spirit. Malboro has a Triple Triad card with good values for a Level 5 Monster Card.

Final Fantasy IX [ ]

The Malboro first appears at Pandemonium, and afterward on the world map on the Mist Continent during disc 4. They can float, but are not very difficult, partly because (unlike in other games) their Bad Breath only hits one character.

Final Fantasy X [ ]

Malboros appear in the Calm Lands and tend to use normal attacks over their Bad Breath. An upgrade, the Great Malboro, has a high chance of ambushing the party and opening with Bad Breath. Malboro Menace is another variant which appears in the Monster Arena.

Final Fantasy X-2 [ ]

The Malbor-type fiends found are Malboro and Great Malboro. It takes 24 kills to Oversoul this type of fiend.

Final Fantasy XI [ ]

Malboro is a monster in the Morbol family. The specific morbols known as Malboros can be encountered in the Pashhow Marshlands, an area that serves as part of the route between Bastok and Jeuno. Because monster names are universally the same in all languages, Morbol is the name of the monster family. The enemy named Malboro in the morbol family is a reference to the English translation of the name.

Morbol type monsters are particularly difficult, as they possess an array of breath attacks not limited to the trademark Bad Breath. For example, Extremely Bad Breath causes Instant Death to all players in a wide frontal area of effect.

Final Fantasy XII [ ]

Malboros are the weakest member of the Malboro genus found wandering the Golmore Jungle. Malboro-type enemies are fairly small, usually only human height. However, giant Malboros closer to typical Malboro size can be found during Hunts.

Malboros walk with their mouths facing upwards when not in battle—they tilt their mouths down to attack when they engage the party. They have a range of breath attacks, like Cloying Breath and Putrid Breath, each with a variation of status afflictions.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings [ ]

The Malboro keeps its renowned Bad Breath attack and is an enemy in four missions. The Great Malboro is a tougher version of the original.

The Malboro appeared in a green/orange variant, with smaller mouths on the inside of its mouth (in place of teeth) and on its long tentacles. It was gigantic in size, as large as a castle.

Final Fantasy XIII [ ]

Malboros make no physical appearance, but one of Vanille's weapons is known as the Malboro Wand. It improves her ability to afflict enemies with status effects, referring to the Malboro's traditional method of attack.

Final Fantasy XIV [ ]

Malboros make an appearance in the bestiary. Following the tradition started in early translations of Final Fantasy IV, Malboros in Eorzea are called Morbols and Stropers, with the latter being a weaker variety.

Their signature Bad Breath move targets players in a wide-reaching fan, requiring swift maneuvering to avoid its crippling effects. Players can obtain smaller minion versions as treasure within the dungeon Aurum Vale.

Upon unlocking the Blue Mage job stone, the player can learn the Bad Breath spell by observing it being used by an enemy Malboro in battle.

Morbol Seedling is a minion the player can acquire. Square Enix's Eorzea Cafe also served a dish called "Green Salada of Malboro" whose description translates to: If you eat this with the purple bad breath sauce, then perhaps your breath will become as smelly as that of Toxic Tamlyn, the giant morbol you encountered on that Guildhest...?

Final Fantasy XV [ ]

Malboros are enemies fought during the Main Quest The Hand of the King, the Hunt No Stopping the Great Stink, and in Duscae. They appear in swampy areas and ambush the party.

Li'l Malbuddy is a cartoon malboro popular in Insomnia, who stars on his own TV show. Some fishing lures are also fashioned after malboros, good for catching some of the bigger fish like Vesper Gar, Snakeheads and Arapaimas.

The Marine Malboro appears as an obtainable R monster. It is a Water-elemental monster whose type is Climb, class is Plant and its specialty is HP. Its hero tech is Toxic Bubbles which unleashes a large shockwave upward. Its leader bonus is Waterstorm which increases Water damage dealt by 30%. Its auto-effect is Dark Damage -10% which reduces Dark damage taken by 10%.

The Dark Malboro appears as an obtainable R monster. It is a Dark-elemental monster whose type is Climb, class is Plant and its specialty is HP. Its hero tech is Ghastly Breath which unleashes a large shockwave upward. Its leader bonus is Darkstorm which increases Dark damage dealt by 30%. Its auto-effect is Dark Damage -10% which reduces Dark damage taken by 10%.

The Malboro species now includes four members: the Malboro, Great Malboro, Malboro King, and Cassie. The Cassie is a unique "domesticated" Malboro that is pink in color and has "bunny ears". Unlike regular Malboros, Cassies have very sweet, good-smelling breath that charms the opponent or puts them to sleep with 100% success, and a type of Malboro also appears in Brightmoon Tor with the Turning job command.

Etymology [ ]

[view· edit· purge]"Malboro" may derive from the Japanese onomatopoeia boro, the sound of an upset stomach. The word mal means "something bad" or "illness". The name could also be a reference to Marlboro Cigarettes, since the creatures often spew horrid fumes.

Malboro is known as Xylomid in the French localization of the series. Perhaps in order to avoid references to the cigarette brand, the monster's name is rendered as "Molboro" in the Italian version of the franchise.
